While our club takes a break from meetings for the hot summer months, our activities continue.
May 27th – Eleven club members visited CHaRM – the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials on Columbia Drive in Decatur. We carried along 11 styrofoam coolers to recycle and we saw how those items are turned into highly compressed blocks which are used in the construction industry for insulation. Reservations are required to keep the flow of traffic through the facility steady. They accept the following materials for recycling: Aluminum, Paper, Metal, Plastics #1, #2, #4, #5, #6, and Styrofoam (no black). They also recycle some items for which there is a fee per item or for over a certain limit: old tires, mattresses (those with internal springs), electronics, appliances, chemicals and paint. For a complete list of items visit their website LIVETHRIVE.ORG.
